Publisher Description
Memoir, intercontinental cycling adventure, music guide, Cadence is the debut book by ABC Classic FM's Emma Ayres.
Accompanied by Vita, her steadfast bicycle, and her violin, Aurelia, Emma Ayres cycles her way from England to Hong Kong.
But this is also a journey through the keys - and the music that has inspired, shaped and provided refuge for Emma: Beethoven quartets, Mahler symphonies, Brahms sonatas, Bach suites ...
It is a book of questions too: How does the instrument you play reveal who you are as a person? Should you tell the serious Pakistani chap who has just welcomed you into the men's quarters of his house that you're not quite who he thinks you are...?
Provocative, intelligent, surprising and funny, Cadence is a delight from one of Australia's best-loved broadcasters.

DJ's travels with a fiddle
Adventurous British Australian musician and ABC Classic FM's morning presenter, Emma Ayres, rode her bicycle alone from Shropshire to Hong Kong in 2000- with a baby violin on her back. She has a lively style, just like her natural and animated presence on Aussie radio each morning. I enjoyed her book a great deal. She writes about her mother bringing up four children alone after the husband walked out. Emma's mother insisted all four children learn a musical instrument, but forced the violin on Emma (she yearned for the cello). Fortunately, she discovered the viola and went on to study music seriously and to play in string quartets and the Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra. Emma analyses many of her most beloved classical music in vivid detail. Most of the book is about her amazing journey alone across Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and China. She adored Pakistan and played for numerous avid listeners on the road, whenever she stopped. This is a travel tale, a growing up story, a musical tribute. I loved it.
