This book consists of thirty-nine essays of about 800 to 2000 words. These essays are written from a first person view, except one of them, in which an event of Wells’ life is described.

The person who tells the stories is a young, aspiring writer, who lives a modest life with his wife. Through his eyes we see the way society works and all its faults.

In his essays, Wells portraits the economic, political and historical topics and in some of the essays he has literary themes. In all of them, he presents a humorous point of view and they represent a humorous social satire. The serious subjects mentioned in the essays are ironical.
