Book One of Two.
Five years after abandoning the Sagrada Academy, Elezar Grunito has become infamous in the sanctified circles of noble dueling rings for his brutal temper and lethal blade. Men and women of all ranks gather to cheer and jeer, none of them knowing Elezar’s true purpose. But a violent death outside the ring marks Elezar as a wanted man and sends him into hiding in the far northern wilds of Labara.
There, creatures of myth and witchcraft—long since driven from Cadeleon—lurk in dark woods and prowl the winding streets. Soldiers and priests alike fear the return of witch-queens and even demons. Elezar soon learns that magic takes many forms, some too alluring to resist, others too terrible to endure. But just as he begins to find his place in this strange new country, the past he left behind along with his school days returns to challenge him once again.
Return to the world of Lord of the White Hell in this fantasy adventure from Ginn Hale.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Hale (Lord of the White Hell) draws the reader into a troubled fantasy world with lush descriptions, an innovative magic system, and well-realized worldbuilding. After accidentally killing a man in the defense of a friend, Elezar is sent away for his own protection, appointed as royal envoy to the distant city of Milmuraille, where he's instructed to seek peace with a powerful witch queen. There, he encounters the street witch Skellan, a charming, half-feral young man dealing with problems of his own. But with a malevolent violet flame devouring all of the magic in the city, burning those with talent and destroying ancient wards, it seems as though Elezar and Skellan will have little time to properly investigate their mutual attraction. Hale grounds the narrative with a convincing romance that plays out against a gripping thriller-style plot. While some of the story is predictable, Hale keeps things moving at a brisk pace, weaving multiple threads and juggling a large cast, and setting things up nicely for the final installment.

A Magical Adventure
Oh my, oh my, oh my. What an extraordinary tale and so rich in detail. With all the descriptions of Milmuraille; the sights and sounds, smells and tastes, I felt as though I experienced them myself. This is a wonderful adventure full of magic and power.
Skellan is a young homeless witch who lives to protect ‘his’ people of Milmuraille and has high hopes of releasing his city from the power that holds it. Both Elezar Grunito and his friend Artreau Vidiya, are sent to Milmuraille, Labara, under the guise of, respectively, Artreau’s varlet, who himself is posing as Fedeles, duke of Rauma. After Skellan is rescued by Elezar, so starts a wild adventure that brings Skellan and Elezar closer.
All the characters are drawn so well, the main ones as well as the secondary ones. I absolutely loved Skellan for his wildness, his devotion to the people of his city and his determination to right wrongs. And Elezar, a strong presence, who is fighting his own demons. Together, as they draw closer to each other, find themselves embroiled in magic, danger and a fight for their lives.
A remarkable story. I loved it.
