Abstract. The objective of this article is to analyze the changes in the occupation of the agricultural manpower in Brazil during the extensive and intensive agricultural production cycles between 1960 and 2000. After the 1930s, the Brazilian economy underwent deep transformations. The modernization of agricultural production methods was one of the transformations that indicated the evolution of the capitalist production structure. This process or modernization cycle was accentuated as of the 1960s, characterized by technological cycles and new forms of organization of the productive process. In Brazil, changes in agricultural credit policies and the formation of agro-industrial structures led to an inversion in the intensive model. Production started to be more intensive in manpower and land exploration, but more extensive in its social and environmental impacts. This change resulted in the exclusion of those incapable of adapting themselves to the new agricultural production models and an increase in rural exodus.
