Every small town has a village idiot. The guy that’s not crazy enough to be hauled away kicking and screaming wearing a white coat with straps on the back, but the guy that’s just plain odd. Portage has the Peters family and oddity and idiocy have descended the bloodlines of their crooked veins for five generations. Everyone in Portage knows it; they’re just the crazy Peters. Old Tom Peters started digging for Pedro’s Gold on the Devil’s Rowboat 140 years ago and ever since generation after generation have suffered from the curse. They don’t start out crazy, but once they begin digging they change. But what if the Crazy Peters are the sanest of the bunch?
When seventeen-year-old Thomas Patterson leaves his Calgary home to spend a year in Cape Breton with his maternal grandmother and his autistic uncle, he has no idea that he is part of the crazy Peter’s family and local legend. Despite the animosity that exists between his parents and his grandfather Jeep, Thomas decides to meet him and his hypochondriac, pothead wife, Winnie, to formulate his own opinions and learns quickly what life in a small town means.
