A major indicator of an eroding democracy is the commercialization of society. Commercialization has always been in contention with Humanist values. Doing something only because it is profitable and not doing something else because it isn't profitable must be carefully segregated to the private sector in a democratic society. Commerce must be segregated so it doesn't destroy civic values way beyond its perimeter of legitimacy. Even every major global religion has warned its people not to give too much power to the working commercial interests. Furthermore, global corporations are overtaking and destroying democratic processes--on the installment plan. They are global and therefore have no allegiance to any country or community--and they make no bones about it. I once sent a letter to the chief executive officers of the top one hundred U.S.-chartered corporations. The letter, paraphrased, read:
