A DEAD WOLF
A DRUG DEAL GONE WRONG
A LETHAL FEMALE ASSASSIN
Hannah Wester, a detective in the remote northern Swedish town of Haparanda, finds herself on the precipice of chaos.
When human remains are found in the stomach of a dead wolf, Hannah knows that this summer won’t be like any other. The remains are soon linked to a bloody drug deal that went down just across the border in Finland. But how did the victim end up in the woods outside Haparanda? And where have the drugs and money gone?
Hannah and her colleagues are soon caught up in an increasingly complex investigation. But time is scarce and they aren’t the only ones looking.
When the secretive and deadly Katja shows up, unexpected and brutal events start to pile up. In just a few days, life in the border town is turned upside down. Not least for Hannah, who is finally forced to confront her own past.
Reviews
‘A violent, action-packed police procedural’ THE TIMES
‘Scandi-noir at its very bleakest — so cold and haunting that it all but takes your breath away… this is a story that lingers long in the mind.’
DAILY MAIL
‘ In Cry Wolf Rosenfeldt, the creator of The Bridge television series and the Netflix hit Marcella, delivers a dark, engrossing and fast-paced read.’ FINANCIAL TIMES
‘The new year has barely started and already it seems like I’ve found my top book of 2022 … this is a riveting novel bringing together the wild and rugged sense of isolation found in the best Swedish crime fiction with the moral dilemmas inflamed by human fallibility of a classic noir novel. A superb read and an entertaining opener to a new series.’

“The first book in a new series by Hans Rosenfeldt proves that he is the master of creating dark corners woven together by mystery, tragedy and greed… Dark yet engaging; intricate yet simple; and overall, a truly thrilling ride… Cry Wolf was not at all what I expected, and I can’t wait for more.”

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Rosenfeldt, creator of the TV series The Bridge, debuts with a fast-moving procedural set in Sweden's remote north. The city of Haparanda has seen international trafficking, both legal and illicit, throughout its long history. When dead wolves are found with human remains in their bellies outside the city, policewoman Hannah Wester and her chief and lover, Gordon Niska, investigate. Hannah and Gordon soon have to look into a spiraling series of vicious drug-related crimes that may be related to atrocities committed by Katja, a sadistic hit woman sent by a Russian gang lord to retrieve 30 million kronor worth of drugs. Tormented by menopausal hot flashes, her own dark past, and a failing marriage, Hannah struggles through her anger at being female, as well as at Sweden's swelling gang problem and its failing socialist policies. Rosenfeldt's abrupt cinematic cuts and vivid bursts of violence keep the pages turning, despite the somewhat predictable plot. Haparanda, strikingly described in human terms ("she grew so fast she creaked"), is a character unto itself. This standalone is ready-made for TV.
