Publisher Description
Candace ‘Cub’ McKittrick is the thirteen year-old daughter of an American military attaché. In early 1977, her father’s post in Monrovia, Liberia is drawing to a close. In the weeks leading up to their departure, she has mixed emotions about leaving and trepidation about her future in a strange land - America. Cub is frightened by Liberia’s poverty, terrified by the wildlife, and ambivalent at best about boys. She’s also deeply attached to her neighbors Gina and Estelle Manganello, and to the free and independent life she leads as the daughter of a diplomat in pre-war Liberia.
While Cub struggles to savor her remaining time at the little American Cooperative School and also begin the process of detachment, her fledgling emotions are further put to the test when she’s assaulted by the Collins boys, three sons of an American army sergeant living up the road.
The episode catapults Cub into a new range of challenging adult emotions. In her final days in Liberia, Cub navigates her rage and desire for revenge with the help of others who are watching over her - a teacher, her sister, and the houseboy, Arthur.
