For the past 55 years, Cubans have hobbled together American cars with European spare parts, faced food shortages, and generally learned to live with limited resources. They've also created a culture with nearly 100% literacy and internationally recognized medical technology.



And now, with American diplomatic relations thawing, the contradictions continue. Food is abundant for tourists but not for Cuban nationals. Beautiful old buildings stand equal chance of restoration or ruin. The punishment for killing a cow is 5 years in prison. Music, medicine, and art thrive.
