Daniel Deronda is a novel written by Mary Ann Evans, known by her pseudonym George Eliot, an English novelist, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. The novel was first published in 1876 and was her last completed novel and set in the contemporary Victorian society of her day. It includes social satire and moral searching, Jewish proto-zionist and kabbalistic ideas. It is considered as one of the greatest of Victorian novels.


The main characters are Daniel Deronda - the ward of the wealthy Sir Hugo Mallinger and Gwendolen Harleth - the beautiful, spoiled daughter of a widowed mother. Story takes place in fictional town of Leubronn in Germany. Daniel is very keen on beautiful, mulish and selfish Gwendolen. Gwendolen’s family gets financially ruined and she pawns her necklace and gambles to make her fortune. Her necklace gets returned and she realizes it was Daniel who redeemed it for her
