A dog of his own, ponies, ferrets, a rescued fox cub, a tamed jackdaw... from the age of six, Hugh learned the ways of life on a remote farm estate in the Brecon Beacons. His was a truly wild childhood but one with duties of butter making, kennel cleaning, even caring for his own tiny flock. Shepherds rode the mountains on their ponies, Welsh must be spoken at school, snow kept them housebound for months - Hugh remembers all this in amazing detail.
