The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) conducted its first men's baseball championship in 1947. In the 1988-1989 academic year, 668 schools were sponsoring varsity men's baseball teams, with approximately 19670 participants. (1) By 2003-2004, the number of varsity teams had increased 39% to 867, involving 27 262 participants. Participation growth during this time was apparent in all 3 divisions but particularly in Divisions II and III. SAMPLING AND METHODS
