The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) conducted its first men's ice hockey championship in 1974. In the 1988-1989 academic year, 126 schools were sponsoring varsity men's ice hockey teams, with 3842 participants. By 2003-2004, although the number of participants dropped slightly to 3782, the number of varsity teams had increased 6% to 134. (1) Slight participation growth during this time was apparent in Divisions I and III, whereas Division II held its last championship in the sport in the 1998-1999 academic year. SAMPLING AND METHODS
