The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) conducted its first men's lacrosse championship in 1971. In the 1988-1989 academic year, 150 schools were sponsoring varsity men's lacrosse teams, with a total of 4805 participants. By the 2003-2004 year, the number of varsity teams had increased 41% to 211, involving 7100 participants.
