JASON Brown, boatman, who undertook the difficult task of helping to row Paul Keeton down thirty-five miles of the Avenair river to Walston Broad, and then to the foot of the small village, the name of which is Walston, where Paul Keeton was born and raised, had quite a long journey ahead of him, but he continued at it like a man. One summer evening, the bargain was struck – late in August – in this manner. Jason Brown was sitting down in the boat, which was moored to the foot of the very old stone steps. It led from the bridge down to the river, where the Avenair widens and the bustling city of Chester smiles in its waters, when Paul Keeton descended down the steps and stared at him.
