SO, WHODUNIT THEN, DOC?
It takes a while for this story to start making sense, but when it does, its originality shines through like a sun going nova against the infinite blackness of space. In LIGHTS OUT, we find The Doctor on a space station, standing in a queue for coffee (of all things) when the station’s lights go out. When they return, there is a corpse on the floor.
And so the duty of determining whodunit falls into the lap of one of the greatest scientific minds the universe (or any universe, for that matter) has ever seen. Or ever will see. Or is currently seeing.
The problem is, the power failures keep happening. Which means, of course, so do the murders. But at least we know that as long The Doctor is still upright when the lights come back on, the Good Guys are guaranteed to overcome the baddies. Well, we hope so, anyway.
I give this short story four stars. I was disappointed in the non-role Clara had in this tale, and i don’t pick up a Doctor Who book to learn who (or what) the killer was. So overall it was a slightly disappointing way to end what has been one of the surprise reads of the year. But at least i can pick the 12 volume set up again (in the future, or in the past, or any second now...) and re-read all the classics found within.
