Double Cross Double Cross

Publisher Description

FBI Agent Laurel Evertson’s investigation into a scam targeting the elderly takes an unexpected twist when key evidence leads her to Morton Wilmington, a felon she arrested five years ago on her first undercover assignment. That case has haunted her since, and though she’s vowed to forget Wilmington—and what she sacrificed to put him away—he is now her best lead.

Houston Police Officer Daniel Hilton fears his grandparents may be the scammer’s next targets, and he’ll do anything to protect his family—even force interagency cooperation. But he’s quickly drawn to Laurel’s empathy and zeal and agrees to follow her lead . . . even if it means teaming up with a felon.

As the unlikely trio uncovers evidence suggesting the scam is more extensive and deadly than they imagined, both Laurel and Daniel find themselves in the crosshairs of a killer. Together they must decide if they can trust Wilmington’s claims of redemption, or if he’s leading them straight into a double cross.

Fantastic Suspense

Wow. What a start. Double Cross has all the makings of a great Christian, romantic suspense. From the action-packed and explosive start, the plot slows down a little as we meet Daniel Hilton, a Houston Police Officer, who is investigating an insurance fraud which has swindled his grandparents out of thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, I found that this part of the novel drags a little as the story and crime is set up, though it certainly is an interesting take on a suspense novel as Daniel, while a police office, works the case as a family member. Also working on uncovering a scamming ring is FBI Agent, Laurel Evertson. She once sacrificed everything to put a bad guy in jail, but is again asked to come face to face and work with the man who haunts her nightmares in order to solve the insurance fraud crimes. The book picks up pace as Laurel goes undercover and the action, including car chases, shoot outs, attempted kidnappings, more shoot outs and sniper attacks, explodes from there. As Laurel and Daniel cross paths during the investigation, Laurel feels trapped between maintaining her cover and her growing attraction to the handsome and stubborn police office who won't walk away.

DiAnn Mills' sharp writing style makes this a great story. There are lots of surprise twists and the romance is beautifully sweet. Daniel is patient with Laurel and yet manages to woo her rather charmingly. The faith aspects are handled well, as Laurel struggles to believe anyone could love her with her past, God included, and Daniel, a man strong in his faith, tests his patience as the hunt heats up and becomes personal. Both also struggle with trust and just how much faith can change a person.
