Publisher Description
From the ultimate storyteller Stephen King comes, a 'joyful, uplifting' (Entertainment Weekly) tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences.
In the small town of Castle Rock word gets around quickly. That's why Scott Carey only confides in his friend Doctor Bob Ellis about his strange condition. Every day he's losing weight - but without looking any different.
Meanwhile a new couple, Deirdre and Missy, owners of a 'fine dining experience' in town, have moved in next door. Scott is not happy that their dogs keep fouling on his lawn.
But as the town prepares for its annual Thanksgiving 12K run, Scott starts to understand the prejudices his neighbours face. Soon, they forge a friendship which may just help him through his mysterious affliction...

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In this surprisingly sweet and quietly melancholy short novel, King (The Outsider) weaves an eerie, charming tale of the ways that strange circumstances can bring people together. Scott Carey is losing weight, but not mass, and there's no scientific explanation for it. Scales register him as lighter and lighter, though his body remains as potbellied as ever, and the effect is constant regardless of what he's wearing or holding. Shaken by his untreatable, supernatural ailment, Scott begins to notice the world around him and particularly becomes aware of the nasty prejudice that other residents of Castle Rock, Maine, are inflicting on his lesbian neighbors, Deirdre and Missy. He sets out to fix the injustice ailing their small town, and maybe make some friends along the way. This is a lilting ode to the ineffable power that crises hold to change and mold those involved into something new. King's tender story is perfect for any fan of small towns, magic, and the joys and challenges of doing the right thing.
Customer Reviews
Short. Very short.
I don’t mind a short book, perhaps this is novella sized. But it came with a book sized price tag that I did not appreciate. It’s Stephen King so it’s good but I am certain I would not have paid the price had I realised it was a two hour read. The danger of preordering books.
So the tale is a quaint linear journey of a man with an unusual problem who uses this to undo small town small minds. It’s a bit of a fairy tale, somewhat simplistic but the author draws a likeable character like no one else. Worth the read, not the price tag.
Such a shame
I was truly looking forward to the latest book but at $16.99 (roughly 12 cents a virtual page) for a 1 1/2 hour read....not gonna be added to my library. Steve, lift your game. You are disappointing your fans.
Ridiculous pricing
The story itself was enjoyable & could have been easily been worthwhile EXCEPT for the fact it is 132 pages for $16.99. Biggest ripoff in a long time. As a dedicated reader it has now made me question if I’m willing to pay exorbitant rates like this for a short, short story. May just be becoming an ex dedicated reader 😢
