PRAISE FOR JOHN BIRMINGHAM
"mesmeric readability" Weekend Australian
"[Birmingham displays] an exuberance and virtuosity that is positively Clancyesque" Time
'Monsters,' said Vince Martinelli. 'There are monsters on the rig, Dave.'
Dave Hooper has the hangover from hell, a demonic ex-wife and the claws of the tax office sinking into him. So the last thing he needs is an explosion at the off-shore oil rig where he works.
But this is no ordinary industrial accident, and despite the news reports, Dave knows that terrorists aren't to blame for the disaster. He knows because he has killed one of the things responsible.
When he wakes up in a hospital bed guarded by Navy SEALs, he realises he hasn't been on a bad acid trip. It all really happened. Yet his shock is cut short by a startling self-discovery; his contact with the creature has transformed the overweight, balding safety manager into something else entirely. A goddamned superhero.
Then he learns the attack on the rig is only the first.
THE DAVE HOOPER TRILOGY
Book One: Emergence
Book Two: Resistance
Book Three: Ascendance
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
With its macho protagonist, pyrotechnics and bloodthirsty monsters, Emergence is the book equivalent of an explosive action movie. The first title in the new trilogy by Axis of Time series author John Birmingham is great entertainment. He puts his crusty protagonist through the wringer, as Dave transforms from washed-up oil rig safety supervisor to unwitting military superhero. Birmingham shows his mastery of action-packed thrillers with a world-weary, pulp edge.

A shame that parts very hard to read
I found the first half great but then reading through the chapters from the perspective of the monsters was laborious and confusing. Ok in the end but a bit tough going.
Explodey awesomeness
Explosions, monsters and The Dave. What more could you want? A rift opens between our world and theirs, and demons spill through, intent on rendering humanity back to feedstock. One man stumbles into the role of humanity's champion and must defend us from the demon Horde. This was a cracking read, full of action, smatterings of humour, and the most fallible and human of heroes. Can't wait for the next one.
Brilliant thriller fun
Super original stuff - bags of fun: reads like a blockbuster movie. Hero Dave will be a classic in the mould of McLane and Solo. Unputdownable. If John Birmingham - who also wrote the America Gone and WW2 alt history series - isn't soon rolling in cash from movie rights and global book sales there is no justice in the world.
