The author is Australian. Her debut novel ‘The Yellow House’ (2018) won the Vogel Literary Award. This is her sophomore effort.
Patrick, a successful musician although past his prime, and Alison, an accomplished actor in her younger days, are both late forties. They live in an isolated Scottish manor house where Alison’s mother Frances died a year earlier after a long illness. Patrick’s 18-year-old daughter Neve is staying with them for an extended period. Neve’s mother, and Patrick’s ex-wife, Shannon, comes from her home in Australia for a long weekend to celebrate Neve’s birthday.
The three women all have secrets, which come out as the weekend unfolds in alternating narratives. The male support cast includes Patrick, an older neighbour Gareth and his son Elixir. (Really.) Relevant historical details differ depending on who is doing the telling.
Ms O’Grady writes beautifully. The setting and a sense of foreboding that pervades combine to give the novel a gothic feel. Some of the secrets were not particularly compelling, to me at least, and there wasn’t much in the way of redemption. I was left feeling there was more to all three protagonists. Perhaps that was Ms O’Grady’s intention. I’m a bloke. What would I know?
