Midwestern computer nerd Harlan Smith comes under the spell of "The Major", leader of a strange militia that meets in the church basement and conducts special operations in the vacant lots and shrubbery of suburbia. In his efforts to break free and attract a mate, he is aided by Zeke, a school-bus wrecking transient who will turn up later as a major character in Lost Lake.
