Publisher Description
Herta Ehlert, a former bakery saleswoman from Berlin, was among 44 S.S. defendants who were tried for war crimes at Lueneburg, Germany. The British tribunal heard months of court testimony and passed death sentences for some of the prison wardens. Among the most notorious was 22-year-old Irma Grese whose brutality to Jewish inmates was well documented. The tribunal was comprehensive for Ravensbruck, Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen death camps. Some of those convicted collapsed in tears following their sentencing. Herta Ehlert lived to be 90 years of age.
