Long adds a sixth volume to her Pennyroyal Green series I Kissed an Earl, etc.) with this run-of-the-mill historical romance. Julian Spenser, marquess Dryden, sets trends that the rest of England hurries to follow, but he meets his match in schoolteacher Phoebe Vale. Julian plans to wed someone else, but he's so drawn to Phoebe that he asks her to be his mistress. Despite their mutual attraction, she refuses, but others take note of Julian's interest in Phoebe, and men are soon vying for her attention as part of a series of cruel bets. Snappy, playful banter between Phoebe and Julian will appeal to Regency fans, but despite an opening scene of gunplay, initially slow pacing will frustrate those in search of a livelier tale.

Sweet and Very Well Done
I adore a good "Regency" romance, but one can read a lot of dross before discovering a pearl. "How The Marquess Was Won" is a rare pearl. Uncommonly, this story focused first on the intellectual connection between the two leads, and through a series of witty and entertaining conversations early in the story I could FEEL the mutual admiration and respect emerging between them, long before the physical attraction was realised. Somehow this made the physical intimacy that came later so much more involving. More believable. Beautiful, in fact. The "conflict" keeping them apart was nothing new - Titled Lord vs. Little Miss Nobody - and I'm sure I've seen that ending before... but the sensitivity with which the author illustrated their individual journeys, their fears and doubts was very well done. I also found the depth of the prose and lovely imagery remarkable. And then there was the humour. I chuckled with delight many times throughout the book, but the antics of Phoebe's cat during a certain series of scenes with Jules had me guffawing like an idiot for several minutes. All in all a gentle, touching and satisfying read.
