Fantastic romance
Corina is emerging from the shadows of a long grieving period after she lost her brother. But as her family breaks down due to the overwhelming sadness, no one knows that Corina also lost a husband during that terrible time five years ago. Her marriage to Prince Stephen of Brighton was done in secret and against the laws of his country. Madly in love, rules and family obligations hardly seemed to matter to the young couple. But in the wake of her brother's death, Stephen broke it off with Corina, offering no explanation for his sudden change in mind. Now five years later, Corina is shocked to find Stephen in her work parking lot and even more shocked that he is here to ask for an annulment. Yep. They are still married. Determined to get answers about her brother's death, Corina refuses to sign the papers unless Stephen will explain. As Corina finds herself returned to Brighton on a work assignment and continually confronted by Stephen she will need to decide if she will risk everything to love again.
From the start you know where the story is going, but the journey is delicious, toe-curling, gleeful-giggle-inducing romance. But there is mystery and intrigue too: what happened in Afghanistan that made Stephen walk away from Corina? God's presence is overt in this book, but it works in this story of princes, kingdoms, designer ball gowns, tiaras and heiresses. There are plenty of miraculous occurrences, but the story never feels overly contrived. I especially loved the characters. Prince Stephen and Corina are brilliant characters that seem to jump off the page in full colour. But the standout is the romance.
I didn't finish the second book in this series, but am glad that I tried the series again and I read this book in one sitting. It can be read as a standalone, but readers of the first two books will pick up on familiar characters, particularly Susanna and Nathaniel who play a prominent part. Overall, a very enjoyable read.
