Humanity Renounced

What on Earth was I doing
back in that hellhole,
dead city
whose only life
was a woman
choosing a lover among many?

Hadn't I escaped
a long time ago
those yellowed lace curtains,
the dread of the homeless
crazed like on Hell's burning coals
between night's empty streets
and that deadly salvation?
