Publisher Description

Hurricane Alma is a quirky adventure of friendship and discovery set in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1976.

Nineteen year old narrator Amelia has just been taken to Birmingham by her vivacious, bawdy, overbearing mother, to get her away from Beaufort, South Carolina. (Amelia has been caught in a tryst with a much-older Colonel).

Amelia is befriended by stand-up comedienne and apartment house mate Alma. Amelia wanted a life of intrigue and she gets more than she bargained for with Alma, Sibilant Sally the Nazi-hunter, Veronica the Vampire, who lives in the basement apartment, and worldly and beautiful Monique.

The Village Voice has just dubbed Alma The Female Lenny Bruce of the South. Everyone finds Alma adorable and precious. Alma is no stranger to the bizarre, which sometimes borders on the fantastical; and so begins Amelia's journey.

Amelia is introduced to this world of threatening Nazis, Nikola Tesla inventions, and carrot diets. She still has to deal with her long-distant mother. In the end it will be a tale of passion and discovery, at the edge of reality.
