I, Messenger

Riding alone on a crisp December morning, Tom Reynolds suddenly and uncharacteristically curses. For the fifth time in as many rides, his iPod had delivered the same anonymous message—this time ironically following The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.” So begins the quest by the Washington and Lee professor to unite the growing chasm between the communities of science and religion. Whether prank, hoax, or divinely inspired, the message sets Tom in search of the truth involving the origins of man, the mysteries of UFOs, questions of quantum physics, the nature of religious experience, and the search for meaning—or at least the meaning of search. This novel seeks to stretch the reader’s perspective on the many dimensions of faith. In addition to offering alternative interpretations of religion, it challenges the assumptions of the scientific community, highlighting provocative gaps in our knowledge of the ultimate question of the origins of the universe and the egoistic species called Homo sapiens.
