Love this Book
I recommend “ I’m Ready for Kindergarten” as an excellent resource, not only for parents but also for education assistants and teacher mentors in countries like Indonesia. In I’m Ready for Kindergarten Roundtree focuses on the key areas, essential for developing a strong foundation for literacy and numeracy. She goes through each key area, giving parents background knowledge to ensure their understanding and then details valuable activities to support development, using readily available resources.
Roundtree’s use of case studies to discuss and illustrate some common problems expands the reader’s understanding of some of the many issues which can impact on a child’s readiness for kindergarten.
I recently used I’m Ready for Kindergarten whilst volunteering as a teacher mentor in Bali. Although I am an experienced literacy consultant, I had never worked at kindergarten level and it was a huge challenge deciding how to have maximum impact in a limited time. The teachers I was mentoring had little knowledge about early literacy development and were very poorly resourced. Roundtree’s succinct text helped me to quickly identify what I would focus on and I adapted many of her ideas and learning experiences to suit that context. It was a life saver!
