IN THE WORLD

This book is included in the 13th series of our “The Most Classical English Literature Library”. It is a selection of My Apprenticeship, a classic work by Gorky, a famous Soviet writer, poet, critic, political commentator and scholar. The novel describes the life of the main character Alyosha (Gorky’s name in the text) from 1871 to 1884. In the road of life, he has been through a lot of hardships, dealing with all kinds of people at the bottom of society. However, he reads a lot of books whenever he has the opportunity. The experience of life and a lot of reading expanded Alyosha’s vision. He was determined to “be a strong man, not to be overcome by circumstances”. In My Apprenticeship, Gorky writes his life as a teenager in a rounded style, and uses his own life experience to reflect some typical features of Russian social life and the customs of the society at that time.
