Publisher Description

From cavemen to Beethoven to Coldplay, explore music in the first truly interactive e-textbook of its kind. Interactive Listening is a multimedia expedition through the history, science, and diverse languages of music.  Every page uses audio, video, 3D instruments, tablet drawing exercises, or instant listening tests to actively engage learners.  With over 120 built in music examples, listen to Tibetan monks, a Dixieland parade, or a Dubstep DJ while you cross 35,000 years of music with sounds from every continent and each chair in the orchestra.

Why has music been written in caves, ships, and cathedrals in every corner of the human odyssey? Interactive Listening was designed by two music professors to test your ears, eyes, and mind, in an experiential search for the truth about what music really is.

Listen like Beethoven. Question like Miles. Learn like the Beatles. Hear yourself.

i havent laughed so hard for a long time

this book is hilarious - if the sample provided is anything to go on, my students will come away from it with some interesting ideas - three years after his death, Debussy started composing "machine music" in 1921 after hearing Russolo at a fair - Beethoven's famous symphony with the four notes and the oboe cadenza is variously referred to as the seventh or the third (but never the fifth) - dynamics is explained as "weather" - pentatonic scales are popular in the world because we have five fingers (but not 5/4) - bassoons are described as "difficult to recognise" - music is described as like deja vu because it has been around for a long time, and the main part of the section on rhythm waffles on about "chronotopes"! on top of all that the whole thing is edited like a chinese made instruction manual - spelling mistakes abound and sentences wander on and on in search of a point. the format has much to offer but you'd be well advised to wait a while until some of the serious music textbooks bring out ibooks...
