The beautiful, thought-provoking essays in Island Home are must-reads for anyone who’s spent time in the Australian landscape or contemplated the creative process. We were mesmerised by Tim Winton’s evocative descriptions of his childhood wanderings in nature, as well as adult surfing and camping trips—he captures moments of disquiet and shock and also wonder and exaltation. Winton offers fascinating insights into how he honed his writer’s craft, revealing his early influences: novelists, artists and environmentalists. And he takes us on a provocative tour of Australia’s history, arguing that geography is central to both our character and our future.
