Paul Faustino, South America's top sports writer, sits opposite the man they call El Gato – the Cat – the world's greatest goalkeeper. On the table between them stands the World Cup... In the hours that follow, El Gato tells his incredible story – how he, a poor logger's son, learns to become a World Cup-winning goalkeeper so good he is almost unbeatable. And the most remarkable part of this story is the man who teaches him – the mysterious Keeper, who haunts a football pitch at the heart of the claustrophobic forest...

A keeper
This is a wonderful book. A blend of sports writing, coming of age and ghost story fantasy, this award winning novel is an exciting read. Peet captures the tension of being goal keeper whilst developing Gato's story as a metaphor for more important things, like respect. The character of the journalist Paul is better drawn than that of Gato, which is a deliberate strength of this novel, as it lends to the mystery surrounding the man he is interviewing. The structure of a recorded interview, with the journalist reflection blend seamlessly with the imaginative, fantastical twist to the narrative. This novel is as entertaining as Mal Peet himself. An exciting read, especially for soccer lovers, but also for anyone who is trying to work out their path in life,
