Killerbyte
by Cat Connor

Ellie Conway is an FBI agent who works serial crime cases. As a hobby, she runs an internet poetry chat room. When someone tries to kill her, it soon becomes obvious it’s linked to her after-hours pursuits on cyberspace. Matters become complicated when her assailant turns up dead in the trunk of her car. As the chat room’s patrons starts dropping like flies, she realizes there is something far deeper going on than first thought.

Despite an abundance of crime scenes, no evidence can be found to identify a motive or perpetrator. The death toll rises and eventually includes her best friend and her own mother, before a chance remark from twelve years prior surfaces to provide the first real clue, which unravels the killer’s twisted goals.

About Author :

Cat lives in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, with her husband and the youngest three of their seven children. She is a long time member of Backspace.org, (an online writers group). Cat is very active on MySpace, as are her two main characters (Ellie Conway and Mac Connelly), which is proving to be a lot of fun. In the last few years her short stories have appeared in ThrillerUK, Mystericale, Bewildering stories, T-zero, The Writers Post Journal and Conceit Magazine. Currently Bewildering Stories are considering another of her shorts.

The idea for her first Conway novel, Killerbyte, came about after Cat received a string of death threats while co-running a poetry chat room, back in the days of MSN chat. The thought that people could get so nasty online fascinated her. The second novel, Terrorbyte, grew from a conversation about living with a mentally ill parent with the real life model for Mac Connelly.

Reviews:

Readers who enjoy suspense and FBI crime thrillers will find Cat Connor’s novel killerbyte to be right up their alley. This is the first of several stories featuring FBI agent Ellie Conway, and it is well-written, gripping, and highly entertaining. Not only is the action realistic and exciting, but the mystery is well-executed enough to leave readers guessing for the entire duration of the novel, and the characters are developed in such a way as to render them both real and familiar. Before I picked up this story, I had never heard of Ms. Connor, but by the time I finished killerbyte, she had definitely increased her fan base by one. In all, I found killerbyte to be an excellent read. The tension created by the suspense is so heavy as to be almost tangible, the action is both exciting and gruesome, and the mystery is extremely well-executed. Add to this Ms. Connor’s polished and enjoyable writing style, and you have a book that is almost guaranteed to please. The second novel in this series featuring Mac and Ellie is titled Terrorbyte, and I am definitely going to have to get my hands on it in the future.
