Will the real Des Nilsen please stand?

Brian Masters’ “Killing for Company’(first published in 1985) is a scholarly and skill fully written account of the life, remand and trial of Dennis Andrew Nilsen (Des). The story of the serial-killer is written objectively, and compassionately, with a trace of affection. Much of the dialogue is based on interviews, letters as well as sketches and the prolific writing/musings of Nilsen himself.
The book is clearly influenced by the time it was written. It is very masculine oriented concerning serial killers and the professionals involved. Much debate concerned whether Nilsen was “mad” or displayed a personality disorder. The author examines this psychological dilemma from a variety of view points, but dismisses more modern alternative psychological theory as being “misinterpreted and vulgarised by the soppy generation of the sixties”. Would our modern technology, such as MRI scanning, have helped clarify this vexing problem of diagnosis (or, perhaps, labelling)?
An excellent book, best read with an understanding of the cultural backgrounds of the narrative.
