Publisher Description
Louis Nowra burrows beneath the sensationalist Underbelly ‘sex and sin’ narrative, revealing stories and a cast of characters – some household names others little-known - that not even a writer could conjure up.
Kings Cross is a no-holds barred place, where backpackers, prostitutes, strippers, chefs, mad men, poets, beggars, booksellers, doctors, gangsters, sailors, musicians, drug traffickers, eccentrics, judges and artists live side by side. Part flaneur, part historian and part eyewitness, Louis Nowra is the best possible guide to a place both real, and a state of mind.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
One of Australia’s most celebrated writers turns his attention to the characters and stories of Australia’s most famous and notorious locale. This colourful and thoughtful portrait of “The Cross” will appeal to lovers of quality non-fiction—and is, in many ways, an allegory for our national character.
Customer Reviews
Great book!
I couldn't put this book down! Saw Kings Cross in a whole new light. Mr. Nowra's writing is poetic, and there's plenty of humour in the book.
Kings X
I couldn't put this down, loved the stories and history, just a great read!
The Cross comes to life
What a great read! Loved the colonial and mid-twentieth century history and the more contemporary bits -- who knew so much exciting stuff had gone on in Kellett Street where I spent so much time in my late teens.
