Publisher Description

Michel Ouellette's Le testament du couturier takes Franco-Ontarian theatre in a new direction. Set in a futuristic world reminiscent of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and devoid of specific geographical markers, it evacuates almost entirely the Ontarian referent. The "Suburbs" (la "Banlieue") replace the rural towns, and fear of the future eclipses the dysphoric narratives of founding town fathers. This study explores Ouellette's departure from the mimetic principle in favour of a strongly metaphorical, decontextualised fictional space. The gown operates as a vantage point. It is not only a clandestine artefact, and as such a powerfully subversive, erotic stimulus, but also as a "text-textile," a shimmering skin-like site containing historical and mythical memory. Yet, it is also indissociable from its effect--havoc--and thereby evokes Artaud's "theatre of cruelty," which gives radical freedom but opens up anguish. Thus, Ouellette's play enters into dialogue with Western theatre while reengaging with issues of otherness, individuality, alienation, suspicion about communication, and the fragile nature of communities.
