Little Mitchell

On Mount Mitchell in the North Carolina mountains, a tiny baby squirrel named Little Mitchell begins life in a chestnut-tree nest where all his siblings die and he alone survives. Below him lies a rugged world of barefoot children, one-room log schools, and remote cabin families whose hard lives are softened by mountain hospitality, simple gifts, and the rare joy of education. When a weary lady arrives expecting a hotel and instead finds a humble home, her visit sets the story in motion. Soon she and her guide discover Little Mitchell abandoned high in the tree, cold and helpless after his mother fails to return. She rescues him, shelters him inside her waist, and carries him through a perilous climb into the Black Mountains, where storm, fog, steep drops, and dark fir forests turn the journey into an adventure. At the summit, a forgotten can of condensed milk saves the starving squirrel.
