Publisher Description
Like millions of other women, HLN anchor Christi Paul blamed herself for the emotional abuse heaped on her by her first husband, whose violent, profanity-laced tirades left her feeling as though she had no value, no self-worth, and nowhere to turn for help. Then one day, when Christi was taking refuge in a church parking lot, the verse "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" popped into her head. In that moment, she realized she did have someplace to turn after all. Holding fast to her Christian faith, Christi began the arduous process of rebuilding her self-image and regaining control of her life.
Now happily remarried and the mother of three girls, Christi feels called to share her story in the hope that other victims will find courage to seek the help they desperately need and deserve. Written with candor and poignancy, Love Isn't Supposed to Hurt chronicles Christi's personal experience with emotional abuse and shows how—with God's help, some unconventional therapy, and faith—she was able to break the cycle and regain her sense of self-worth.
Customer Reviews
Highly Reccommended
I was hesitant at first to purchase this book because I really wasn’t sure about the content, the writers angle or style. Would it be all about the awful abuse, would there be any ‘take aways” that I could really use or relate too and I am happy to say that I was unable to put this book down. It was excellent.
My first comment must to be praise Christi Paul on her writing style and expressive words. She really conveyed the message that verbal abuse actually feels like taking a blow to the body. This really solidified the insidious nature of verbal abuse, and although you can’t see the bruises of verbal abuse, they are truly there.
I highly reccommend this book to any person expereincing abuse (any type of abuse). It is written in a way that allows the reader to really reflect on their own situation, it is emotive, it is real, it is honest. It truly is a self help book with personal exercises which are both challenging and enlightening.
