Few family feuds last 30 years, but this is sadly the case for the Meredith family, who haven’t heard from the wayward Alys in decades, with at least one of the generations believing her to be dead. Jones builds the relationships between the women so effortlessly, identifying the conflicts that are present in even the happiest of families, and exploring the complexities of mother-daughter relationships with quite brutal rawness. There are glimpses of the Gavin and Stacey-esque Welshisms and wit that made Jones a household name in the Noughties, but her ability to force a reader to stop in their tracks to blink back the tears is the quality that makes Love Untold an absolute must-read for mothers and daughters everywhere.
