Martin McHugh has saved defenders and football teams with his brilliance as a goalkeeper. He has saved the hopes and dreams of parishes all over Leitrim, and Cavan and Longford.

And these last 10 years he has fought like a lion to save himself – as he twice faced down cancer and survived. His battle to save his own life has been an inspiration to all who have known him, and all of those who watched him prove himself one of the best goalkeepers in Ireland through the 90s.

Martin McHugh was goalkeeper in 1994 when Leitrim enjoyed their most historic year, winning the Connacht title under John O'Mahony – and he never retired. At 50 years of age, he is still keeping goal and teaming up with men half of his age

Born To Save reveals that football also saved Martin McHugh's life, as his unquenchable love of the game saw him sneak from his hospital bed to live his dream once more between the posts.

For the last two years, Martin McHugh has been fighting and saving lives during the Covid-19 pandemic, taking his place in the front line amongst the healthcare workers in Sligo University Hospital.
