Master Under God

True LIfe Tales of a Master Mariner --- Master Under God is based on the term used by Captain H, Cotter in describing the role of the ship's Master, which Cotter summarises as, "The ship's commander is 'Master Under God', invested with almost absolute power - a burden of responsibility indeed". In this narrative Captain Gwilym Williams recalls his time with the Cunard Shipping Company, In the Carinthia, as Chief Officer to learn of his promotion to Master of the cargo ship "Ivernia". These are the days of uncertainty for the traditional seafarer but Gwilym's lucky star is firmly in position and his wife Joan is often now able to join him on some memorable cruises and deep-sea voyages.
