From the USA Today bestselling author of Midnight Captive, the latest Killer Instincts novel is “off-the-charts-hot”* romantic suspense that takes readers into the heart of an enigmatic mercenary...
Out of all the stone-cold mercenaries in Jim Morgan's black ops organization, Derek “D” Pratt is the most intimidating. He is tight-lipped and covered in tattoos, and even the other guys on his team are afraid to ask him about his past. D’s been off the grid for years, but after his teammate Sullivan is mistakenly captured in his place, D is forced to come out of hiding and face his demons.
When D lands in Mexico, he’s ready to risk everything to save his friend. To complicate matters, Sofia Amaro, a feisty doctor whom D had a one-night stand with months ago, has tracked him down. And in an instant she’s unintentionally caught up in his life-threatening rescue mission.
Now D must extract not one but two people from the most violent world he's ever encountered. And one of them is carrying his child...
Kennedy's seventh Killer Instincts romantic thriller (after Midnight Captive) is good clean fun in a formulaic kind of way. Mercenary Derek "D" Pratt is a typical tough hero with emotional scars from a rough childhood; one of his teammates has been kidnapped and D won't rest until he rescues him. Dr. Sofia Amaro, who runs a clinic for the likes of Derek and his crew, is a kindhearted woman with an inexplicable weakness for gruff, tough men. Sofia discovers that she's pregnant with D's child following a one-time wild ride. When she makes a stupid, uncharacteristic decision, it throws them both into a perilous situation. Finally, D lets down all his defenses against intimacy, baring his soul and considerably more to the woman who he wants to share his life with if they can escape some really bad guys. It's standard stuff, adequately pulled off by this seasoned author who knows what her readers want.
Each book in this series is better than the last
Impressive & emotional development of the friendships & relationships that thread together the stories in this series. The character development of this group of mercenaries make them more familiar, and each person, with their flaws & past traumas, each find someone who understands and accepts them. Elle Kennedy’s books are never predictable, and the romance isn’t formulaic (you know those romances that follow the same pattern? Not these). She makes you FEEL for her characters. And I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one!
