Thank goodness there are more of these
A Discovery? Cosy speculative fiction. Maybe not quite five stars, but I'm loving it.
Jahir is Eldritch, a race which could be taken for human. One of the other characters christens him "Tall and Pretty".
Vasiht’h is one of the pelted races, a Glaseaha. He looks a bit like a centaur, but he is furred, has paws and wings and pointy ears which swivel. I really love it that he sometimes sits on his haunches. They meet on Jahir's first day at university, when Vasiht'h is playing the fool for six little girls, patients from a nearby hospital and Jahir joins in the foolery.
Maybe I should mention that they are both empaths and their courses are medical/psychology.
There is a lot about love. And death. Jahir will live for 500 years. Can he bear the pain of loving when the chances are that those he allows himself to get close to will die centuries before he does? There is a lot more to the book than that of course. Doctors and patients, classes and pracs. The scenes where Jahir and Vasiht'h visit the little girls in hospital are delightful. I am sooo glad that there are a couple of sequels and many more books about the Pelted Universe.
One thing I dislike about the book is the unpronounceable names and the variety of races. By the time I've read the book a few times, as I surely will, I'll get them all sorted out.
