Publisher Description

In August 1969, a young, lovelorn Englishman abandons his new life in North America and flies out to war-torn Nigeria, where he takes up a position with an American oil company. He finds himself in a strange, alien world, which is tearing itself apart in a brutal civil war and where the rule of law is intermittently enforced by the ill-disciplined military.
Mobi’s sexual awakening commences when he discovers the Lagos nightclubs. After a number of erotic and riotous escapades, including being arrested for murder, he meets and subsequently marries the sensuous, hot-blooded, highly volatile Azzy, a gorgeous black girl from the Lagos slums.

At the cessation of war hostilities, Mobi is ordered to make a road journey through the devastated ex-Biafran territory, where the bridges have been destroyed and dead bodies litter the roads. The trip is jam-packed with hair-raising incidents.

The couple set up home in an abandoned house in the war-ravaged, 'wild west' town of Port Harcourt, and during the next two years, they have a stormy relationship which leads to many thrilling adventures with some unexpected consequences.

Azzy's abusive, drunken behavior spirals out of control while Mobi’s close friendship with a local military officer leads to yet more trouble when a heady mix of sex and alcohol create a profound hostility between the two former friends.

‘African Odyssey’ is a story of romance, adventure, erotic sex, abuse, murder and much more. Not without humor, the book delves deeply into the characters of the two main protagonists: Mobi - the introverted, young Englishman, who finds his dream girl in the bars of Lagos but becomes a borderline alcoholic; and Azzy - the volatile, drunken siren, whose childhood of abuse has indelibly scarred her for life.

The novel describes life in lawless Nigeria during the late 60s and early 70s, where witch doctors were still part and parcel of daily life.

Along the way, we meet a host of diverse characters from the era: bigoted expatriates; thieving renegades, corrupt locals; good-hearted white settlers; 'ancients' steeped in African traditions; brutal, drunken military; and the omnipresent 'ladies of the night'.
