Must the Land Divide? Must the Land Divide?

Must the Land Divide‪?‬

A Biblical Theology of the Land for Inclusivity and Reconciliation

Publisher Description

We have had the privilege of sponsoring several Palestinian leaders over the years, all faculty at Bethlehem Bible College. They include Salim Munayer and Yohanna Katanacho, and now Munther Isaac, author of this InSight. Each of these leaders brings a unique perspective to the global church, one that draws on personal experience as they deal simultaneously with justice and reconciliation. It is teaching that I have grown to deeply respect and appreciate.

Whatever your view of modern Israel and its relationships with Palestinians, an important fact must be kept in mind: Many Palestinian families – Christians and Muslims – lost their land when the state of Israel occupied it. Dispute over ownership of the land lies behind much of the conflict in Israel-Palestine and is an important factor in the entire Middle East. (If you are interested, read my blog entry for February 2012: www.scholarleaders.org.)

Munther Isaac, a Palestinian Christian, addresses issues related to the land theologically. He argues persuasively that sound, biblical theology “reframes the land as a place of inclusivity instead of exclusivity.” From there, he reasons that this sound theology “provides a platform for peace and even reconciliation.”

Dare we hope?

It is tempting to dismiss Munther’s argument as impractical, but he is not a naïve man. As a Christian-Palestinian in a Muslim-Majority context, and an Arab minority in an Israeli context, Munther knows oppression from the inside. Nevertheless, he offers a principled voice for peace. If Munther is correct – and whether or not his argument prevails in our lifetimes – his theology will be eternally vindicated. All movements begin as minorities.

With heart-felt appreciation for your interest and support, and the request that you join us in prayer for peace in Israel-Palestine,
