MY SYSTEM OF CAREER INFLUENCES (MSCI) McMahon, M., Patton, W., & Watson, M. (2005). Camberwell, Vic: ACER Press. ISBN 0-86431-476-0, $36.95. My System of Career Influences (MSCI) is a straightforward counselling tool for use in qualitative career assessment. Developed by Wendy Patton, Mary McMahon and Mark Watson, MSCI consists of an 11-page client/student (referred to in this review as student) Workbook and a Facilitators' Guide. The Workbook consists of a series of worksheets based closely on the Systems Theory Framework (STF) of career development (e.g., individual, social, environmental-societal systems) and reflection activities. By completing these worksheets, students are able to identify and visually represent elements within their systems of career influence that are relevant to their own career story. The Workbook can be completed by students as a semi self-directed activity or as a facilitator-led activity. MSCI has been designed primarily for adolescents and can be administered in individual counselling sessions or with groups. It would also be a valuable resource for career practitioners delivering career education in school contexts. The Facilitators' Guide supports career practitioners develop the understandings of MSCI required to maximise its implementation with students.
