Karly Lane’s 25th rural romance novel reminds us just how expertly the author inhabits this cosy Australian subgenre. Set in a country town in New South Wales, Needle in a Haystack follows Lottie Fairchild, who’s firmly fixated on both family and local history. The latter includes the exploits of bushranger Jack McNally, which has also drawn the attention of author and history professor Damian Loxley. When he arrives in town for some in-person research, Lottie kindly offers to show him around. Soon, the pair are delving into a fun mystery and feeling a strong attraction as they navigate long-held superstitions and even talk of a curse. Lane mingles gold-rush-era Australian history with warm notes of romance and intrigue, crafting a grounded story that’s inviting on multiple levels.

This might just be one of my favorite Aussie rural romances yet—and I’ve read nearly all of them!
As always, Karly has a way of bringing her fictional towns to life so vividly that I can’t help but imagine which of our little country towns she is writing about this time. The characters are so relatable and loveable, and I found myself completely invested in Catherine’s story, staying up far too late, eagerly searching for a clue that might lead to the happy ending for what felt like a real piece of history.
