New Works 2010 - 2012
Publisher Description
In "New Works 2010-2012," American artist Jon DeWitt Morris (b.1979) showcases his new discarded book series. Known primarily as a figurative artist, Morris has forged a new path in his creative endeavors by utilizing discarded books as his new material. This exclusive digital catalogue introduces key works in this newest series dealing with the slow elimination of the bound matter, and it's growing non-functionality.
In his current works, he utilizes discarded books to create multi-layered assemblages, sculptures and unique objects. In the assemblages, the books have been altered. Their pages and covers cut, painted, drilled, or burned. Remnants of ash and singed pages adorned the surfaces with various layers of paint, pigment, shellac and varnish. These new works operate within the aesthetics of abstract expressionism and design. He also is exploring the power of the book by altering religious literature.
The artist reflects on his recent move away from the painted figure as a way of using a different artistic muscle. “My method of thinking and creating cannot be bound under one media, nor, under one method. I love to paint, but the canvas and that huge white square staring at me became too regimented. I turned to works that involved more production, design and compositional thinking. These newer pieces have allowed me to take a step back from the figure and re-examine my creative process.
