‘A gem of a read.’ Fantasy Book Review
The Malazan Empire - vast, omnipotent and unforgiving . . .
The small island of Malaz and its city may have given this great empire its name, but it is now little more than a sleepy backwater. Until tonight.
Tonight the city is on edge – streets humming with desperate, urgent activity as its citizens hurry to lock up shops, bar doors and shutter windows.
For tonight, there is to be a convergence. The once-in-a-generation appearance of a Shadow Moon – an event that threatens the good people of Malaz with demon hounds and all manner of other, darker things.
And tonight, it is prophesied that the Emperor Kellanved will return – and there are those who would prevent that happening at any cost. As various factions align themselves, a far more ancient presence prepares an all-out assault upon the island.
Witnesses to these cataclysmic events will include Kiska, a young thief who yearns to flee the city, and the war-weary veteran Temper, who simply wants to escape his past.
Although they do not know it, they each have a part to play in a confrontation that will not only determine the fate of Malaz City but also of the world beyond . . .

Ian C. Esslemont’s Tales of the Malazan Empire continue in Return of the Crimson Guard.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Steven Erickson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series only hints at the empire's distant history, which Esslemont, cocreator of the original world, explores in this dark, powerful novel (first published in the U.K. in 2004) and its planned sequels. On a Shadow Moon night on the Isle of Malaz, dead souls rise and demonlike hounds attack any who dare to leave their homes. Knowing that Emperor Kellanved is prophesied to use the Shadow Moon for his own ends, the emperor's enemies gather on the small island for their own nefarious purposes, starting a plot that spirals into bloody violence. Esslemont nails the feel and flavor of Erickson's books and brings the historical characters to life with a dexterity that will win over even the most skeptical fans.
Customer Reviews
Night of Knives
As an avid reader of the Malazan series by Steven Erickson I found this and the Return of the Crimson Guard worthy companion books to the series. Ian has captured the look ( at least as I imagined), the feel and the atmosphere of this wondrous world and at the same time tied up some loose ends from the series. Having become used to quality and quantity with Erickson's work I have given this a four star rating for it lack of quantity. Ian has made up for this in his later equally terrific offerings. I have just purchased the Stonewielder and am looking forward to immersing myself in the complex world once again. I have never bothered to review anything, be it book or game before but I just had to recommend all his books and Ericksons for that matter as a must read for any Fantasy fans.
