On Shadows and Citizens

"On Shadows and Citizens" recounts the seven weeks the author spent in Beijing, China observing and talking with migrant construction workers from rural Sichuan. The four-part narrative depicts their life and work on the construction site and includes interviews, a trip to their home village and a discussion of the role that migrant workers play today in Chinese society. The interviews and events took place between June and August 2005.
